Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), or Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is a common condition that affects women’s ovaries. Up to 7% of women of reproductive age suffer from it.
In this chronic condition:
- the woman does not ovulate or ovulates rarely;
- there is an excess of “male” androgen hormones in the body;
- the woman’s ovaries are enlarged and contain many fluid-filled follicles.
The disease is accompanied by reproductive disorders, metabolic disorders, and psychological problems.
There is no accurate data, but doctors believe that 40 to 80% of women with PCOS are overweight or obese. Additionally, a significant number of patients with this disease have insulin resistance.
Nowadays, plenty of doctors tend to group PCOS, obesity, and diabetes into a single condition called metabolic syndrome. The complications caused by the syndrome also include:
- hypertension;
- hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol).
Are Ozempic and PCOS compatible?
The statistics show that women with this condition rarely resort to treatment with Ozempic (semaglutide). According to the data, less than 1% of participants in the PCOS community reported positive effects after taking it.
A study, published in the National Library of Medicine, was conducted to determine the most effective weight loss medication for women with PCOS.
The study involved analysis of reports in the PubMed, MEDLINE, and EMBASE databases on the accumulated positive experiences with semaglutide, liraglutide, exenatide, and other drugs.
“Semaglutide has the potential to be a therapeutic agent for PCOS patients. However, more reliable clinical trials are needed,” the researchers concluded.
Conclusion
Currently, there are no reliable studies or data on using Ozempic in PCOS for weight loss.
However, some researchers still believe that the drug has the potential for use in women with PCOS.
